Have you ever had a bad haircut? Of course you have, everyone has. Chances are your appointment began with you saying something like, “Just take off a couple of inches.” When it comes to getting your best haircut, communicating with your stylist is key. Vague requests can easily be misinterpreted and end in a haircut that you’re less than happy with. Read on to learn how to communicate with your stylist to get your best haircut ever.
Your stylist is talented, but they can’t know what you want if you don’t tell them. Avoid nonspecific statements like “Just give me a trim,” or “Take a couple of inches off the top.” You want to give specific details such as you need your shortest layer to still be able to go in a ponytail, or you want your bangs to fall just at the bottom of your eyebrows. Be descriptive and don’t hold back. The more specific you are, the easier it will be for your stylist to envision what you have in mind.
Show, Don’t Tell
What a couple of inches means to you may be quite different from what a couple of inches means to your stylist. So rather than telling your stylist how much or how little you want to cut, show them. Use your hands to physically show them how far down your neck or shoulders you want the length, where on the sides you want layers to fall, or just how much of the tips you want to be trimmed. This will avoid any potential issues resulting from a difference of opinion as to what an inch or two really is.
As the old saying goes, a picture is worth 1,000 words, and this is especially true when getting a haircut. If you have a picture of the style you want, bring it with you and show it to your stylist. Tell them what you like and dislike about it. If you want elements from several different styles, bring all the pictures and point out the parts you’d like to incorporate into your style. It always helps to have a visual.
